The Color Coded Map Should be Per Capita

[edit]

The color coded map of absolute count of homeless people per state is so misleading as to be useless. This map should display homeless people per capita. (e.g. Per Capita Homeless Map) Otherwise, the map just tells people that there are more people in New York than Vermont. The fact that the map was sourced from the US government does not excuse this egregious violation of statistical visualization best practice.

I happened upon this graphic on TikTok, so I had to hunt it down. Agreed, this is extremely misleading. Happy to offer my services in updating the map; however, I am not a researcher. Is anyone able to offer a recent per-capita study of homelessness in the United States? This Business Insider map is great inspiration; however, it is from 2019, and homelessness looks a lot different since Covid in 2020.

Wrong numbers

[edit]

If 'In 2013 that number jumped to one out of 30 children, or 2.5 million.[82] - then. it's not possible to have only 0.17% rate !

Contribution Peer Review

[edit]

The contents of this specific article are nicely done, and it has a vast amount of information. I just would like to suggest one thing. The article is great with knowledge and depth of the causes of homelessness, but it feels that it could improve the length. Some content should be added to the 21st century as it could add more details the "Homelessness in the United States." Maybe adding more updates from 2010 and into the current time frame. Adding more depth to that section provides better suitable details of the current topic in question. That is my only suggestion to reclarify that this article is a great source of knowledge. Plans to Add to "Housing" and "Federal and presidential efforts" subsection

[edit]

Hello, I'm intending on making some additions to the page:

  • Describe subsidized/permanent supportive housing, the shift from sobriety & treatment-based housing to Housing First, and the shift's controversy in the "Housing" subsection of "Efforts towards ending homelessness."
  • Add a line about advocacy for homelessness in “Historical background” in “1980s and 1990s."
  • Add a line about the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) to describe its relationship with federal agencies and its targeted programs in the “Federal and presidential efforts” subsection in the “Efforts towards ending homelessness” section.
  • Replace images of people experiencing homelessness to represent them in a dignified manner.
