Analogy with electrical charge
[edit]electrical charge -> color charge (sometimes color number)
electromagnetic force -> color force
charged particules -> quarks & gluons
exchange of photon -> exchange of gluons (difference: gluons are also 'color' charged)
About the two uses of the term "charge"
[edit]Quantum chromodynamics describing the interactions of quarks and gluons is a gauge theory based on SU(3). Because SU(3) is an eight dimensional Lie group, there are eight Gell-Mann matrices and, consequently, eight "charges" (meaning 1) given by:
On the other hand, the most simple no trivial representation of the Lie algebra of SU(3) is three dimensinal, so these matrices are acting in a space of "three colors" (meaning 2). Clearly, the "eight color charges" (meaning 1) and the "three color charges" (meaning 2), are leading to some misunderstanding, because we are using the term "charge" for two different concepts, --Davius (talk) 08:23, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Introduction
[edit]Currently the introduction of this article only gives a very vague characterization of what color charge is and spends an entire paragraph in explaining what it's NOT, i. e. corresponding to actual colors. Could someone expand the first paragraph a bit and add a precise definitiion of color charge in one sentence? --Jazzman (talk) 10:49, 17 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, when I have time for it I will fix the introduction. Please review it when that actually happens and let me know if it still needs changing. OverzealousAutocorrect (talk) 14:41, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
